Microsoft launched Bing, its new search engine, on June 3, 2009. The company is heavily promoting it in hopes of gaining ground on Google, the industry leader. Bing's revenue comes mainly from pay-per-click advertising, which many smaller ecommerce firms utilize. We asked a leading pay-per-click management firm, The Search Agency, what sort of initial results it has seen on behalf of its clients who advertise on Bing. Frank Lee is senior vice president of client services for The Search Agency. PeC: The Search Agency has placed pay-per-click client ads on Bing. Could you tell us about the size of the advertising there? Lee: "We manage over 100 million keywords on behalf of our clients across all the major search engines. We have abo...

Working with Flex and Datagrids

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
Flex 3.0 offers a strong foundation of user interface (UI) controls by which users can harness a great deal of power to create beautiful UIs without having to toil in the details of low level functionality. Of these controls, the DataGrid sets itself apart by offering characteristics similar to a list or tree control (which are also listBase controls), but going further to offer an easy way of displaying columnar data without a complicated interface. In this article, I focus on creating a basic DataGrid and populating it with XML data by using only MXML tags.
- Creating a Basic Data Grid Flex provides an MXML tag to create a DataGrid. Here is our application, with the DataGrid colored in blue: lt;?xml version= quot;1.0 quot; encoding= quot;utf-8 quot;? gt; lt;mx:Application xmlns:mx= quot;http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml quot; layout= quot;absolu...

Guide To Building Successful Websites

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Building a website requires careful planning and a strong foundation.

There are many steps that you need to go through in order to get a website up and running. While many people may skip some steps or hurry through others, each step is an important part of the process as a whole.

The first part of the process is to discover: understand your customers, research keywords, determine objectives, understanding the sales process, and more. Here at AHFX, we send information sheets that help collect this information so that we can be ready to move on in the website design process.

The next part of this process is to design the content, appearance, and navigation of the website. Items are placed in specific places throughout the website in order to draw customers in and persuade them to act. After the design is approved, AHFX codes a simple page to show how the website would look and respond to users. If all is well, we continue to development.

Development of the website is where the coding of all of the pages and functionality comes in. The amount of time this step takes depends on a lot of things, but this step is usually much simpler than previous steps. The earlier steps built a foundation for the website, and as long as they were done properly, we are able to know everything we need to do for the development step.

After completing the development, it is possible to refine and optimize the website. Measuring page statistics, key search terms, and conversion rates allows us to be able to polish the website and make it stand out more. Here, we assure that our discovery was done correctly and that those goals we had set are being achieved.

When these steps are followed through and done correctly, in the end, we will have exactly what we were hoping for. The website will look and feel right, persuade visitors, and make sense as a whole. AHFX uses this guide and knows that it works and satisfies clients.

Good on-site marketing, such as related-product promotions, encourages emotion-driven "joy buying," potentially boosting per-customer revenue and profit. Online shopping can be both a practical and an emotional activity. Often buyers begin an online shopping experience because they seek to save time, save money, or simply for efficiency; but special offers, site interactivity, or good merchandising can encourage impulsive purchases. Academic studies have shown a relationship between what researchers call "the convenience maximization orientation" (when shoppers make purchases in such a way as to be more effective) and "the recreational orientation" or spontaneous shopping. The relationship between the practical, efficient shopper's beh...
